Sentinel U® Nursing Simulation Research Grant (SUNSRG) Findings 2021-22: St. Joseph’s College of Nursing

St. Joseph’s College of Nursing Performs Experiential Study Using Virtual Simulation to Improve Confidence and Skills

The 2021 Sentinel U® Nursing Simulation Research Grant (SUNSRG) allowed six organizations to research how virtual simulation products can improve learning outcomes for nursing learners. As a 2021-22 SUNSRG grant recipient, St. Joseph’s College of Nursing conducted a distinctive research study with ADN students.

After five weeks, learners had increased confidence and felt less pressure to perform. – St. Joseph’s College of Nursing self-report finding

SJCON performed its own research supported by Sentinel U’s in-kind grants, researching how virtual simulations may improve confidence with clinical judgment of prioritization skills for hospital-based associate degree (AD) nursing students. In their last semester of nursing school, ADN students were assigned the care of virtual patients and evaluated on their use of critical thinking and prioritization to make clinical judgments. Sentinel U’s Vice President of Healthcare Innovation – Laura Gonzalez, PhD, APRN, CNE, CHSE- A, ANEF, FAAN – mentored the university on how to use the simulations in conjunction with the research that will contribute to medical science and education.
