Texas-Based Nurse Leader and Educator Recognized for Her Role in the Advancement of Simulation for St. Luke’s Health at Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center.
HOUSTON, Texas — (March 7, 2023) – Sentinel U®, an award-winning provider of web-based education simulations for nursing schools, hospital systems and healthcare professionals, has selected Stacy Lewis, DNP, MSN-Ed, RN, RN-BC, CMSRN, as the first quarter finalist for its “2023 Simulation Star of the Year Award” program.
Now in its third year, the program recognizes the nation’s most influential and impactful nurse educators. The Texas division director of clinical simulation for St. Luke’s Health at Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center in Houston, Texas was chosen because of her efforts to promote virtual simulation education.
“It’s truly inspiring to hear how today’s nursing educators are cultivating an environment of innovation, collaboration and dynamic leadership within the nursing profession,” said Jeffrey Caplan, president of Sentinel U. “Stacy’s work advocating for virtual healthcare simulation is helping to keep the industry moving forward. We are proud to name her as a finalist for the Simulation Star Award.”
Lewis, who holds a doctorate in nursing practice and healthcare leadership, a master’s degree in nursing education and is a certified medical surgical nurse, received nominations from colleagues who admire her dedication to providing the nurses and other clinical professionals at TXBSLMC with new opportunities.
Education Nurse Specialist Carly Dillard, DNP, RN, highlighted the remarkable transformation Lewis has made to the institution’s simulation center.
“The simulation center was previously closed and not fully operational, and in just a few short months, she has turned it into a great academic center for nursing staff, educators and residents,” said Dillard. “She is a terrific educator and leader, and I am proud to know her.”
Angela Sterling, MSN, RN, an education nurse specialist with quality leadership expertise at TXBSLMC, recognized Lewis for her efforts providing clinical education to newly onboarded nurses and other clinical professionals.
“Dr. Lewis was aware that new nurses were educated via Zoom and other non-traditional methods during COVID, so she took the initiative and created several new simulations to assist the new nurses with their fundamental and critical thinking skills,” said Sterling. “She is truly a gift to TXBSLMC.”
According to Keziah Alummoottil, an education nurse specialist with informatics background, “Dr. Lewis has made remarkable changes and improvements to our simulation center. She has streamlined the process to ensure everyone has a seamless and smooth experience. Overall, her personality and presence are beyond uplifting, positive, encouraging, and infectious to be around. Her love for nursing is clearly seen in everything she does. She truly is an individual that will make positive changes to our profession.”
Lewis is the first finalist vying for the “2023 Simulation Star of the Year Award.” Sentinel U will invite the nursing community to vote for their favorite finalist during Healthcare Simulation Week in September. The winner will receive an award and a Sentinel U Leadership Simulation Bundle to help in their development as a leader in nursing. The bundle includes training in Interprofessional Teams, Nursing Quality Indicators® , and Patient Management and Delegation®.
Last year, Sentinel U presented its second annual Simulation Star Award to Sufia Turner, RN, MN, CCSNE. The instructor and simulation program lead at the University of Manitoba College of Nursing (CON) in Canada was recognized by her peers for her contributions to the advancement of simulation through practice and research.
